On October 13, the third session of the Tutor Appointment in the fall semester of 2022, sponsored by the Postgraduate Work Department of the Party Committee of Nankai University and undertaken by the School of Finance, was successfully held. Professor Li Xuefeng, doctoral supervisor of the School of Finance, was invited to this lecture to focus on the cultivation of academic writing and research method, helping postgraduates develop standardized academic research habits and start their academic research journey. More than 100 graduate students participated in the lecture online.
Professor Li pointed out the importance of research ability in the financial industry, taking the requirements of financial market for talents as the starting point. Professor Li pointed out that graduates should develop core competences in job hunting, including the ability to find and solve problems, which should be consciously exercised in a series of processes such as research topic selection, research design and research methods.
Then, Professor Li focused on how to 'produce' a good paper, pointing out that students need more training under the guidance of the standard framework to write a good paper, rather than work behind closed doors. Professor Li took why investors following the herd as a case, leading students to analyze the reasons why this problem exits and why there is no academic research on this topic, and guided students to determine the topic, pointed out what is the topic selection report and how to write the proposal report. Professor Li stressed that research is not reading, but finding the shortcomings of existing literature and the inspiration it brings to us based on our own research interests, so as to form a preliminary idea to solve the problem. Finally, Professor Li pointed out that scientific research is a process rather than a result. As long as academic writing is conducted within a standard framework, it has its value and science, and continuous polishing and cooperation with others are important to form a good paper.
In the interactive session, students asked questions about how to deal with the situation that it is difficult to understand the empirical model during reading literature, how to improve the ability of reading English literature, how to deal with the lack of literature in the research field and so on. Professor Li gave patient and detailed answers to the questions they encountered in the process of academic research. Through the themes lecture, students learned the importance of academic research and gained an in-depth understanding of how to do academic research well.
