Recently, the Graduate Student Association of the School of Finance and the Student Career Development Center of the School of Finance jointly launched the teacher-student exchange theme activity, called “returning tutors’ tea party of tutor appointment”, which aims to create a platform for in-depth communication between professors and students and create a colorful and positive academic culture atmosphere. The main speakers of this issue are He Jia, Wang Xue, Shi Yu and Wang Bo, who shared their life experience and discussed academic frontiers with students about their overseas study experiences.Graduate student counselor Wang Xiaojuan and nearly 100 students from undergraduate and postgraduate participated in this activitity.

Wang Bo, who graduated from Ohio State University, talked about his experience of changing majors and emphasized the importance of finding one's real interest when choosing whether to study abroad or at home. Shi Yu, who graduated from UCLA Anderson School of Business, shared her experience of choosing the research path, and mentioned how to deal with the difficulties she encountered on the research path and what she gained from her research experience. Wang Xue, a graduate of Purdue University, pointed out that whether one is engaged in academic path or employment, the skills needed are common, such as the ability to think, logic and expression, and that after confirming one’s target path at the beginning, one will take fewer detours, and even if one does not decide too early, one does not have to be too torn. He Jia, who graduated from the National University of Singapore, gave different advice to different students from the perspective of class tutors: in the undergraduate stage, there are actually unlimited possibilities, so don’t set a circle for yourself at the beginning, firstly, you should exercise your skills, secondly, you should contact the society, and thirdly, you should try more; in the graduate stage, you should prepare for your goal, and you will always encounter various difficulties in the process of studying for a PhD. The important thing is to persevere, and you will definitely have a harvest.

In the Q&A session, Wang Xue shared the different application preferences of different application programs and the preparation needed before applying; Wang Bo shared the employment direction for PhD graduates with the actual situation; He Jia shared her own study experience in Singapore; Shi Yu shared the competitiveness of employment for master’s degree abroad with reference to the experience of her peers. Finally, these teachers unanimously advised students to try more, find the direction they are really interested in and persevere.

Through the communication with these teachers, the students further clarified their choice of direction, broadened their international vision and improved their academic quality. The Graduate Student Association of the School of Finance will further build a platform for teachers and students to communicate with each other and give full play to the role of mentors in the education and training of graduate students by combining such topics as “the pursuit of ideals and beliefs, the cultivation of scientific research methods, career planning, academic integrity norms, experiences in scientific research, and psychological adjustment”.
