2021.10.24

At noon on October 21, the second phase of "noon sunshine - Young Scholars Forum" in the autumn semester of 2021 was held as scheduled in 116 of the School of Finance. Wang Bo, a new young scholar of the School of Finance, shared his working paper -- two-step analysis to study the problem of multiple identities. Han Xu, the Party secretary, Fan Xiaoyun, the executive vice president, and Liu Lanbiao, the vice president attended the event. Jiang Shengjun, the assistant professor of the School of Economics and Management at Wuhan University, was also invited as a discussant to make comments on this project.

Wang Bo first outlined his research projects, including constructing data platform for China's high-skilled workforce and research on domestic health policy. Then, he introduced the research background of this paper: the definition of individual "multiple identity" and its policy implications. This paper explored the impact of multiple identities on the market returns of doctoral students with interdisciplinary background. After that, Wang Bo introduced the highlights and contributions of this paper, mainly including data selection and model construction. In terms of data, Wang Bo introduced the logic and source of data selection in detail. For example, in the background selection of whether there are interdisciplinary subjects, the subjective and objective judgment methods are adopted to corroborate each other, in order to ensure the reliability of identifying interdisciplinary subjects. In terms of model, the novel two-step identification strategy proposed in this paper can be extended and applied to studies across different contexts, such as the "identity" problem in the field of management and education. Finally, Wang Bo finished the presentation with two main conclusions: the primary research discipline plays a decisive role in determining market returns, and there is no wage premium for interdisciplinary workers.

Jiang Shengjun gave comments on the paper online. she summarized the advantages of this article: excellent data selection, wide application range, and strong expanding ability of the model. At the same time, she also pointed out some areas that can be improved: the selection of multiple identity sub features and the research of generalization methods, the advantages of two-step analysis model compared with other models and so on.

During the interaction activities, Wang Bo fully communicated with the teachers and students present. The forum had a lively atmosphere and achieved rich research results.
